Today I want to take you back in history. To a time when - on Saturdays and Sundays and every other day in between people had picnics. Not at a specially created picnic site - no! Somewhere in nature, next to a bright and friendly rippling stream. Where a small buck watched them serenely from the shadows and the birds sang in the trees - who's leaves softly sighed in the breeze. Tablecloths would be spread on the lush green grass, wine and glasses unpacked and then came the food. Home baked apple tart with fresh cream, cured ham on freshly baked bread and various other treats.

When last did you have a real picnic? Hazzlefree just for the joy of it. On the beach, next to a river. And it need not be a lot of work and planning! Pack 'n good bottle of wine (sparkling wine could be nice as well!) and glasses. Make only one extremely good dish - your favorite terrine or fresh bread with decadent fillings and take along cheerful linen napkins and tablecloth. And enjoy an hour or two under big trees who's leaves whisper about ages gone past. Lie in the sun and dream merry dreams. Sip your wine and enjoy - really feel - the taste on your tongue. Watch how the sun's rays playfully tempt the liquid in the glass. Watch the ants as they run an Olympic race to your special picnic food - and place a bet on the one you think would be the winner! Watch as the birds in the trees above you have a loud and not to elegant tea party - discussing what you eat and when they will be allowed a piece of it.

In South Africa our summer is nearing its end - have your summer picnic before you must prepare for your winter picnic! In Europe and the rest of the Northern hemisphere - summer is on it's way - start preparing for an indulgent, lazy May-day picnic - greet the summer - have a welcoming picnic!

"If you go down in the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise. If you go down in the woods today, you'd better go in disguise. For every Bear that ever there was, will gather there for certain because, Today's the day the Teddy bears have their picnic." (The Teddy Bears Picnic - 1932 song by songwriters J.W Bratton & J.B Kennedy)

So - what are you waiting for Dear Reader! Go down to the woods today and join the Teddy Bears in their picnic! Have a nice day and wonderful picnic!
P.S The above picture was taken in the countryside near our holiday home, on a farm we visited.
